Jim Corbett National Park — India’s oldest, established in 1936 — spans 1,318 sq km across the Nainital and Pauri Garhwal districts of Uttarakhand. It has six main safari zones, each with different access rules, vehicle types, seasonal availability, and wildlife density. The permit system is managed by the Uttarakhand Forest Department, slots open 45 days in advance, and the most popular zones fill up weeks before the travel date in peak season.

For travel agents, the zone question is not about which one is “best” in the abstract — it is about matching the right zone to your specific client: their group size, travel dates, budget, wildlife expectations, and physical capacity. Get that match wrong and the booking is technically correct but the experience is wrong. Get it right and you have a client who books Corbett again next year.

Safari Rules Every Agent Must Know Before Quoting

These rules catch agents off guard — especially those who don’t regularly sell Corbett. Know them before you quote, not after your client arrives at the gate.

• 6 adults maximum per jeep — strictly enforced: The Forest Department checks at the gate. A group of 7 that books one jeep will be turned away. Either book 2 jeeps or switch to Dhikala canter. No exceptions.
• Original government ID is mandatory: Aadhaar, Passport, or Voter ID for every visitor. Photocopies are not accepted. This is checked at permit registration and again at the gate entry. Clients who forget original ID miss the safari — no refund.
• 45-day advance booking window: Permits open exactly 45 days ahead through the official Forest Department portal. New slots release weekly. For Dhikala and Bijrani in peak season (December–May), book as soon as the window opens — slots disappear within days.
• Core zones close mid-June to mid-November: Dhikala, Bijrani, Durga Devi, and Sonanadi close for monsoon. Only Jhirna and Dhela stay open. Clients travelling July–October must be directed to these two zones — no exceptions, the gate simply does not open.
• Morning safaris consistently outperform evening safaris: Wildlife activity is higher in the morning, especially for tiger sightings. Evening safaris (starting around 3pm) are better in summer when animals come to water. When clients ask which time to book, morning is the default recommendation.
• Dhikala requires a full day — not half a day: Many agents book Dhikala expecting a 3-4 hour experience. The drive from Dhangari gate to Dhikala chaur is 40–50 km of unpaved road — 2–3 hours each way. It is a 6–8 hour commitment minimum. Plan the entire day around this safari.
• Children under 5 are not permitted on safaris: The Forest Department does not allow children under 5 years of age inside the park. Confirm your client’s group composition before booking.

How Many Safaris Are Enough — The Honest Answer

One safari is not enough. This is one of the most consistent pieces of feedback from clients who visit Corbett — and it is something agents can address at the time of booking rather than after the trip.

Two safaris across a 2-night stay is the practical minimum — one morning and one evening, or two mornings if the client is staying longer. Two safaris in the same zone give you two different atmospheric windows: dawn light is different from late afternoon light, and animal movement patterns differ completely between the two. Three or four safaris across two different zones — Bijrani and Jhirna, for example — is what we recommend to clients who are genuinely serious about wildlife.

Morning vs Evening Safari — Which to Recommend

Morning safari (gate opens around 6am in winter, 5:30am in summer) is the stronger recommendation for tiger sightings. Animals are most active in the first two hours after dawn — tigers on trails, elephants at water sources, deer in open grasslands before the heat sends them into cover.

Evening safari (typically 3pm gate entry, exits by 6pm) works best in April and May when temperatures peak and animals come to water bodies predictably in the late afternoon. Outside of summer, evening safaris have lower wildlife activity than mornings — not zero, but measurably lower based on sighting patterns.

For a 2-safari itinerary, two morning safaris across different days gives the best results. For a 1-safari itinerary (which you should be pushing back on anyway), morning is always the choice.
